Our History

The story of Hotel Shambala is one of heritage, growth, and a deep connection to the roots of the Himalayas.

Our hotel’s name was inspired by the mythical Shambhala kingdom, echoing our aspiration to offer peace, relaxation, and liberation from life’s tribulations to our guests.

We opened our doors in December 2014. The same year in July, our CEO Tseten Tsatultsang returned to mark a new chapter in our journey, reflecting our commitment to family, community, and creating a haven for all who seek it.

A Legacy of Tibetan Hospitality, Crafting Timeless Tranquility Since the 1970s

Originating from a Tibetan family—the Tsatultsangour’s, our journey began in the 1970s when we established a café in the heart of Kathmandu’s historic Freak Street. By the mid-1980s, we had ventured into hospitality with the pioneering Potala Guest House in Thamel—one of the first five hotels to grace the vibrant streets of Thamel.

The seeds of Hotel Shambala were sown in 2011 when construction began. The family’s vision for the hotel was to infuse minimalist Tibetan aesthetics into modern design, bringing forth an oasis where the past meets the present.

THE TIBETAN TOUCH

Inspired by its Tibetan roots, Hotel Shambala displays influences of the forbidden land in its interior, ambience, and attire. From the use of warm earthy colors to subtle hints of Tibet aesthetics in our decor, Hotel Shambala represents the world of Tibet’s timeless beauty and cultural richness in a contemporary setting.
The blend of traditional motifs and intricate craftsmanship into modern design creates an ambience that is both inviting and spiritually soothing. Tastefully furnished rooms of Hotel Shambala are adorned with clean Tibetan graffiti and carefully curated wooden handicrafts that uplift their overall ambience, evoking the serenity of the Himalayan region. Guests will experience a unique fusion of comfort and cultural immersion that sets Hotel Shambala apart, providing a truly memorable stay that resonates with the spirit of Tibet.
